WHO: Gene Kelly, performing and co-directing (with Stanley Donen)
WHAT: I'm one of those cold-hearted monsters who doesn't think Singin' in the Rain is the best musical ever made. I don't even think it's the best one produced by Arthur Freed at MGM. (I prefer at least a couple of the ones Vincente Minnelli directed). But it's obviously a great film, one that I've written about seeing on the big screen before, and one that I'm very tempted to go see again tonight.
WHERE/WHEN: The Paramount Theatre in Oakland, 8:00 PM showtime (doors open at 7 and it's worth taking the time to soak in the venue before the show starts)
WHY: The Paramount has a new Spring season of moviegoing announced. Sure, it's all timeworn classics you've probably seen multiple times already. But for five dollars a ticket, why not go anyway, and bring along some of your friends and relations who aren't as movie-savvy as you are? You might get somebody bit by the cinemagoing bug!
HOW: 35mm print of the feature, plus newsreel, animated short film, and trailers.

Everyone should go at least once to
ReplyDeleteone of these Paramount shows, to soak up the sumptuous art deco styling of this magnificent movie palace, It makes the Castro (no offense) look like a dump in comparison
I try to go any time they show a truly classic film I've never seen on the big screen before, though sometimes other options trump those criteria.
